We are a third of the way through this month already and each day provides more gratitude than the previous. It is day 10 of my 30 days of gratitude challenge and today I am grateful for choice! Sounds simple but having the freedom to choose what you want to do or what you want for your life is a privilege in a lot of ways. I like having autonomy over my life. Growing up, most of us didn't have a lot of say over what we could or couldn't do. We were often told what we would eat, hot we should dress, and what we would be involved in. That ain't choice! Which is why I am grateful for choice. Having the ability to choose is very different from having the ability to control. I know I am not in control of this life, but I am in control of the choices that I make to navigate through it!
As a kid, and even now as an adult truthfully, I hated not having a choice. I wanted to be given a say in what I wore, how I had my hair, where I went, everything. I simply wanted to have input in my life. This is probably why my parenting style allows for my children to make their own choices. One thing about making choices that I would learn much later in life, is that with every choice comes some sort of consequence or result. Your choices employ results. Some that you may like and others that you may not like. Either way, your choice will have an impact on you more than anything else. I tell the Glittergang all the time when I am helping them to understand their choices that each choice comes with a set of results and before you make that choice you need to be prepared for the outcome.
I used to think it was only because I didn't like to be told what to do, but it is so much bigger than that. I like having choices because I get to learn about me...what I like, what I don't like, when I choose certain things. I get to learn (on my own) what consequences and results may occur because of the choices I've made. My choices are my own and no one can take credit for them, which also means that no one can take blame for my errors. Having choices has made me accountable for both my successes and my failures. Whatever I choose to do is what I ultimately wanted to do or experience.
I am grateful for the ability to have choice whether that choice is good, bad, or indifferent! It is mine and I am most comfortable being accountable for my own choices versus those that have been made for me. This has proven to be true in every aspect of my life. The freedom of choice is powerful and I am so grateful for it!
What are you grateful for today?
XOXO,
MichelleRena
